Teaching Observation
I observed 2 classes on the first day. One was teacher’s class and the other was one of our fellow SEA-teacher class. In our school, I was amazed at the number of students in a class. The maximum is 25 so it was easier to handle class and had more time to focus on each of the students’ work. First class’ topic was to state that we will do something. They used book. I also noticed that the lesson of the English is quite easy compare to Philippines and the reason was because they start to learn English at grade 7. So their lesson per day was not a lot but focusing on conversation and speaking so they had enough time to write down sentences and present before the class. Also, the allotted time for each class is 1 hour and 20 minutes so the time is enough to make students to make their own sentences out of it and have chance to present it in front of the class.
The SMP Labschool Untad Palu uses direct method in teaching English subject. The teacher uses both of first language and target language in classroom. The teacher begins with mood setting, sing a song, reviewing the students’ background knowledge and always ask about previous lesson. In teaching process always asks questions or gives some tasks to checking student’s understanding. They use projector and textbook as their learning materials. When every class is about to end, there is concluding part as a form of activity or by asking students about what they have learned to assess student's learning.
