MY TEACHING EXPERIENCE
I was asked to handle grade 8 students and my topic was to teach them how to express their ability using modal verbs. So first of all I showed them a video about characters using word ‘can’. After the video, I asked students what they noticed in the video and asked what they have learned for the previous week. Then I started with my discussion of the word Can by stating definition and how to use them then showed them some pictures. I asked students what people are doing in each picture and let them say what they are doing including the word Can in the sentences then I asked them to repeat after the teacher. I also taught them definition and how to use the word will in the sentences then asked questions about what they will be in the future so that they can answer the questions using the word will. As to introduce myself, I asked students to ask my any questions they want using the word can and will then we proceed with the activity. In the activity, they had to write down sentences about what they will and can do in order to achieve their dream in the future. I planned to make students present in front of the class but because we lacked time, we decided to continue in the next meeting. The classes were passionate about what they are learning, and I integrate with their interest like asking them what they want to be in the future so that they can see how the lesson is applied in real life situations. There are times that students don’t understand my explanations, my buddy had to speak their native language to make them understand better.
It was my first day of teaching they were participative and the mentor gave me some comments for me to improve my teaching. I loved it because they praised me that I was really good despite the fact that it was my first time of teaching here. I checked their sentences and returned so that they can practice their sentences at home and present next meeting. My first teaching here in SMP lab school was success and I feel so happy about it.
I really enjoyed teaching because students knew how to appreciate the teaching and I saw them enjoying the lessons. They respect the teachers very much yet they want to get closer to the teacher. Sometimes, teaching is not only about learning about the content but also learning attitude and values as they live in the world but I saw students attaining those values of life which are more important than just a knowledge.
