Teaching of SMP Lab School Palu

In Indonesia, they use KTSP and 2013 Curriculum in Indonesia for their curriculum.  I observed one of our exchange student teacher’s class. His class was senior high school grade 11 social. When I went to senior high school, all of the classes took off their shoes when they enter class. It was because the Independence Day was near and they had a cleaning competition in the school. If they have the cleanest room in the school, they will earn 1 million rupiah as a reward so students were very responsible of cleaning. I really liked the attitude of students because they were the ones who bought some stuffs to make their classroom better without complaining even though that is just their class for one year only. Our friend started with introducing himself with short video clip then explained some of the cultures of Thailand. He had time to know students more then they were grouped to learn today’s lesson. His teaching style was student centered which he derived his lessons from students’ knowledge and answers. I also observed another Thailand friend’s class and his method of teaching was visual. He explained same lesson by drawing an image related to the lesson. After that I went to one of the class where regular teacher teaches. The topic was to state that you will do something. The teacher mainly focused on dialogue where they will speak then they wrote their own sentences and asked them to practice at home to be presented in the next meeting. Everyone has different teaching strategies and I couldn’t say which one was the best because different methods and there are different strengths and weaknesses.

Students here learn English as a Foreign Language. Teachers teach local students how to speak English; they learn how to be a global communicator. In English class, they focus on communication more than grammar. The teachers are able to see the progress of their students every day. English is unlike other languages because it’s the global language that people use for communication around the world. Teachers teach English and encourage students to speak for exchanging cultural understanding as well.
